Civil Sector & (I)NGOs: Management & Leadership

Essentials of Leadership

Leadership is about personally stepping into situations that require the determination to stay put or/and the will to change, demonstrating individual responsibility and public accountability for the purpose, the operations and the outcome of projects. Whereas management requires techniques that involve doing, leadership asks for qualities found in being.

Leadership combines traits of endurance, discipline and command of situations as well as the communication of a vision that inspires others to surpass themselves – no matter how difficult the circumstances may be.

With a multi-faceted approach, we examine and develop the match between our own leadership style and the current NGO environment:

  • Learning from history and exemplary lives
  • Managing processes and leading people inside the NGO
  • Stakeholder management and demonstration of leadership with donors, policy-makers and partners
  • Personal, political, and ethical matters
  • Leadership styles & dimensions across cultures
  • Leading change
  • Intellectual, emotional and rhetorical skills for leadership.
